Step 1: Chose your location wisely. The space your altar will take does not have to be a big space. Do you want it in public view or more private? Are you concerned about pets getting into your altar? In this case you can make it portable so you can take it out from a drawer when you need it. However, ideally you want to be able to see your altar throughout your day in order to let the symbols represented inform your brain of your desired programming you are installing for yourself.
Step 2: What is your INTENT for your altar? What is the goal/wish/DESIRED STATE OF BEING OR LEARNING you wish to have from making this Altar process? Write it down to help crystallize the essence of your Intent.
Step 3: Choose an Altar Cloth:
Altar cloths, can be a scarf, a pillow cover or a sacred woven mesa cloth. Anything appropriate that attracts your eye, that has beauty for you can serve to place your altar items on. If you know what Chakra your intent is working on, then you can chose a cloth with that colour and or continue with that colour theme.
Step 4: The easiest next step is to place your written intention on your altar. What 3 elements come to mind after reading your intention on your altar cloth? E.g. if your intention was around love, the 3 elements that come to mind could be, hearts, the colour pink and cotton balls. Don't edit or deny what comes through. Let your subconscious guide this and honour what shows up. In this case I would bring these 3 images in some way onto the Altar cloth.
Step 5: Keep things simple and uncluttered on your Altar. You are using your Altar to program an intention/focus for yourself and for your Brain. Keeping focus on only 3-4 relevant symbolic elements on your altar keeps the focus on your intent, reminding your subconscious of the new program you are installing.
Step 6: Power Up Your Altar by bring energy and attention to your Altar everyday. Activating your connection to your intention and its symbols with a sensory experience lights up and wires the brain to your intention. Before meditating in front of your Altar, you can smudge yourself and or your altar and/or light a candle and/or place a drop of essential oil in a small water filled container on or near your Altar.
Step 7: Rest in the Sensory Experience of your Altar's Beauty. You can sit mindfully in front of your Altar gazing on the symbols and resting within yourself. You can meditate if your choose placing your focus on 1 symbol or on your breath. You can chant or spontaneously hum what sounds want to be expressed. Chose what is simple and easy for you. This way you can energize your altar with positive enhancing energy and sensory experience which will inform and stimulate positive memories to wire into your brain, supporting your INTENT.
You can choose how long you wish to work with your INTENT like 1, 2 or 3 months or lunar cycles (1 lunar cycle =about 29.5 days). Whatever you choose, write the time frame in your calendar so you can commit to yourself in a concrete practical way. Let me know how your altar building goes and send me your Altar photos, should you choose to try this!
